Warning system works ‘to a point’

New Zealanders should be horrified at Jim Anderton’s admission the current tsunami warning system only works ‘up to a point’, says National’s Civil Defence spokesman, John Carter.

“We now have it from the horse’s mouth – the system isn’t up to standard,” says Mr Carter.

Duty Minister Jim Anderton is quoted on the New Zealand Herald website as saying ‘the existing system will work, up to a point’.

“Despite realising the current warning system is ineffective, the Labour Government has left the project to upgrade the system languishing.

“New Zealanders confidence in the warning system and in Civil Defence itself is being washed away.”
