Maori flag decision divisive - Greens

Transit New Zealand should apply its criteria fairly and allow the Maori flag to be flown over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Green Party MP Metiria Turei says.

The decision to refuse Te Ata Tino Toa request to fly the flag creates division on a day when we should be celebrating the bringing together of our two nations and our country's growth.

"Transit has flown non-country specific flags to highlight special events, for example the black fern 'loyal' flag for the Americas cup. Transit should fly the Maori flag, along with the New Zealand flag on Waitangi Day.

"The day is supposed to be about acknowledging the importance of the signing of te Tiriti and recognising the success and the hurts that have resulted. Flying both flags is very symbolic.

"The Government's refusal to endorse the request by Te Ata Tino Toa is ridiculous. The Minister of Maori Affairs should be supporting Maori efforts to build links and demonstrate the advantages that this country gains from its indigenous identity.

"We have Maori symbolism everywhere to denote New Zealandness, from the koru on the national air carrier to the All Blacks' haka. Maori identity is not just for showing off to international community, we need to be proud of it here in our own land.

"The flying of the New Zealand and Maori flags from a national landmark on Waitangi day is surely a good start.
