Literacy giant mourned

The National Party is saddened by the news that Dame Marie Clay has died.

National’s Education spokeswoman, Katherine Rich says, “She is a giant of education sector and her contribution to education, and particular the study of literacy, within New Zealand and around the world has been immense.

“Through her innovative reading programmes and research, her work has touched the lives of many Kiwis, saving many from a life of illiteracy.

“If you are a child of the eighties who struggled with reading but got back on track, chances are you have Dame Marie Clay to thank in some way. Her influence on literacy in New Zealand is unparalleled.

“Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues mourning her loss.”
