Greens chance to show their principles
National Party Deputy Leader Bill English says Labour’s tawdry attempt to railroad plans for state funding of political parties now hinges on the Greens.
“National welcomes the signs coming from New Zealand First and the Maori Party on state funding. The Greens say they support it, and now Labour is likely to be putting heavy pressure on United Future Leader Peter Dunne to keep their proposal alive.”
Mr English says reports during the weekend that Labour’s plans may breach the democratic freedoms outlined in the Bill of Rights are alarming.
“The Greens will look like pushovers for the Labour establishment if they support electoral law that breaches the Bill of Rights. Green supporters will not be happy to see the Greens complicit in shutting down criticism of a tired government.”
National is keen to work with all parties to overturn Labour’s anti-democratic proposals. Mr English says it’s not too late for Labour to do the right thing and properly consult.
“Labour needs to stop the shadow boxing and open up the process.”
