Weak climate change announcement fails to impress

Today’s announcement that the Government will make ‘important decisions’ on climate change policy in the next three months is too little too late, says National’s Climate Change spokesman, Nick Smith.

“This weak announcement is a reaction to the appalling figures released last Friday that show emissions soaring to record levels.

“Labour promised to reduce emissions by 20% by 2010, but last week’s figures showed that between 1999 and 2005 they have increased by 12%.

“Labour has been in office for 7 ½ years and an announcement about an upcoming ‘announcement’ is just not good enough.

“The Kyoto Protocol comes into effect in just seven month’s time, yet climate change policy remains in a vacuum.

“National has long advocated tradable emissions permit system and remains open to talks with the Government on getting the important detail of such a system right”.
