United Future supports emissions trading

United Future spokesperson on climate change Gordon Copeland today lent his support to the announcement by Climate Change Minister David Parker of an emissions trading scheme in New Zealand.

"This is exactly in line with United Future's announced policy position," said Mr Copeland.

"We support the creation of CO2 emissions trading mechanisms to provide economic incentives to reduce greenhouse gases and boost carbon capture.

"We likewise support moves by the New Zealand Stock Exchange and others to establish a market to trade emissions in New Zealand.

"It's an excellent initiative and we expect that a whole range of market mechanisms will make the buying and selling of carbon credits possible under a variety of scenarios," said Mr Copeland.
