Anderton shouldn't be let off the hook
Jim Anderton needs to explain why he tried to hoodwink Labour's Maori caucus over the Fisheries Act 1996 Amendment Bill, says National MP David Carter.
"Papers obtained under the Official Information Act show that he was not prepared to enter into frank discussion with the industry, knowing the lobbying that Labour Maori MPs would come under.
"Further, he specifically signed a Cabinet
paper saying the Fisheries Amendment Bill did not need
consultation with the Government Caucus.
"On 9 December 2004, Jim Anderton said that 'this Government works on the basis of consultation and full disclosure at all times and no surprises'.
"But how does that comment fit with his letter to Hon Parekura Horomia that says 'I would like information on this proposal to stay within the Government?'
"Little wonder the Maori Caucus revolted this week; Mr Anderton was trying to cut them out of the loop.
"Mr Anderton needs to come clean and explain."
