The Mapp Report: North Shore Hospital Crisis

North Shore Hospital Crisis

The last three weeks has seen an unprecedented level of concern about the standard of care at North Shore Hospital.  It has been mostly around the A&E Department, with patients having to wait in corridors for many hours before treatment.

This does not inspire confidence in the medical service provided by the hospital.  Everyone in North Shore will be concerned as to whether the hospital is able to provide the services they need.

There seem to be two specific problems –

(a) The funding formula for hospital services is not being allocated in a sufficiently fair way;
(b) North Shore’s population is growing faster than anticipated.

Both Dr Coleman and I met with the Waitemata District Health Board CEO, Dave Davies, yesterday.  Mr Davies said the Board was having an urgent meeting next Wednesday to deal with the issue.

The Board needs to come up with an immediate plan to solve the urgent problems.  In the longer term, our community needs reassurance that there are long term plans for growth.  That will require the building of the already planned second hospital tower block, on the platform already built.

Dr Coleman and I are hosting a public meeting at 1.00pm, next Friday 20 July at North Harbour Netball.  A representative from the hospital will be present.  Please come along and share your concerns.
