Disability – the Cinderella of health care
The expected release this week of a report from the Health and Disability Commissioner on a man who was severely abused while in care represents just the tip of the iceberg, says National’s Disabilities spokesman, Dr Paul Hutchison.
“There is little doubt in my mind, after listening to dozens of submissions in the Social Welfare Select Committee inquiry into disability services, that widespread systemic abuse, negligence, poorly trained carers, and endemic poor care continues.
“The turnover rate of carers varies between 40% and 60% depending on location.
“There are many people who display inspiring dedication, commitment and compassion to the disabled, but it is very concerning that after seven years of a Labour Government that promised so much that many of the submitters are saying little has changed.
“Disability services under Labour remain the Cinderella of a healthcare system which already has major defects.”
