Is the Government indifferent to death of hunger striker?

Independent MP Gordon Copeland has expressed his deep concern at the seeming indifference of the Government to the possible death of Iranian refugee and hunger striker Ali Panah.

“I believe it is unconscionable for the Government to allow Mr Panah to die rather than grant him refugee status,” said Mr Copeland.

“Clearly, following his conversion to Christianity, he is in fear of his life if he is forcibly returned to Iran. Surely his fast (part of the Christian tradition) and the testimony of Bishop David Moxon is proof of the genuineness of his conversion?”

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights specifically includes the right to change one’s religion; a right which does not exist in Iran but which is explicitly endorsed in New Zealand.”

“How in these circumstances can the Government stand idly by? Should Mr Panah die, are they prepared for the backlash from both compassionate Kiwis and the international community? I didn’t think New Zealand was that kind of country.”

“I make a further plea for his life while there is still time.”
