Transit must give top priority to harbour bridge safety
Transit New Zealand must reassure the public that the safety of the Auckland Harbour Bridge is a priority, says National's Auckland Issues spokesman, Dr Wayne Mapp.
"There is a lot of concern over the maintenance and safety of the bridge after an official engineers' study revealed that the landmark is at risk of 'catastrophic failure'.
"Transit says it is certain the bridge is safe and that it is committed to an upgrade.
"It has previously estimated the bridge's current clip-ons are expected to last until 2025.
"Transit needs to tell the public that these proposed repairs will ensure the bridge will be totally safe for motorists.
"It also needs to inform people of its plans to replace the clip-on lanes when they eventually reach the end of their life."
