Minister welcomes secondary teachers’ settlement

Minister of Education Chris Carter has welcomed ratification of the settlement of the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement that will be in place for the next three years.

The decision by Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA) members to endorse the three-year deal was good news for the future of secondary schooling in New Zealand, the Minister said.

“This settlement allows New Zealand to continue building and maintaining a world-class education system that attracts and retains high quality secondary teachers and supports their professional growth,” Chris Carter said.

He paid tribute to the Ministry of Education, the PPTA, and the New Zealand School Trustees Association who worked for four months to agree terms of settlement.

Secretary for Education Karen Sewell said the settlement would enable the parties to continue working together on the future of secondary education in New Zealand.

The collective agreement gives teachers a 12.5 percent pay increase over three years (four percent each in 2007, 2008 and 2009).

In addition, the agreement contains provisions to support and promote effective teaching and work/life balance.
