Fly Flag Of Unity Says Peters

New Zealand First has urged local councils and publicly owned organizations to resist approaches to fly the Maori sovereignty flag on public buildings.

This follows a debate on the issue by the Manukau City Council which has allocated three months for staff to report on the flying of flags other than the New Zealand ensign and the council flag.

Rt Hon Winston Peters said he has no objection to people flying flags of their choice on private property but public buildings should be kept free of any symbols of separatism.

“We should celebrate our nationhood and the issues that unite us rather than promote displays that drive us further apart.

“My suggestion to local councils is to unite their citizens under the New Zealand flag and leave separatist statements off public structures,” said Mr Peters.
