$12 minimum wage great news, but some still missing out
Labour MP Darien Fenton says that while she is delighted with the implementation today of a $12 an hour minimum wage, some workers continue be paid less.
“There are a group of vulnerable workers employed as contractors for whom the minimum wage protection legislation does not apply, because their employment status does not fit within current legislative protections for employees.
“I have endeavoured to address this inequity through my members’ bill, the Minimum Wage and Remuneration Bill, which is due for second reading.
“I now call on other parties who have supported the $12 minimum wage to get behind my bill so that those who are missing out no longer continue to do so.
“My hope is to see these most exploited of workers joining other workers soon in the significant advances to minimum wage protection we have seen under the Labour-led government and the support of like-minded parties,” Ms Fenton said.
