Focus must be on improving Auckland

Focus must be on improving Auckland

Labour’s Auckland issues spokesperson Phil Twyford today said it’s time for all New Zealanders to reflect on the findings of the report from the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance to ensure our largest city prospers in the future.

“I thank the Commissioners for the commitment, time and efforts they have put in during their investigation. We have great confidence they have traversed every issue critical to Auckland’s ongoing success,” Phil Twyford said.

“Improving Auckland will not just benefit those who live in there. In terms of goods and people movement, Auckland is New Zealand’s gateway to the world. If Auckland prospers, New Zealand prospers.

“Labour will now study the considerable findings of the Commission and listen closely to the public debate.

Labour’s Local Government spokesman Shane Jones said it is crucial that we take this opportunity to get the governance structure within Auckland right.

“The recommendations will please some and anger others, but the key is getting the debate moving in the direction that will improve every aspect of life for Auckland,” Shane Jones said

“From its economic performance, transport strategy, and community service delivery, improving Auckland must be at the heart of the public debate.

“The decisions made as a result of the Royal Commission’s report will have repercussions well into the future. It’s critical we get them right,” Shane Jones said.
