What’s the story, Mr Finlayson?

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Chris Finlayson needs to front up on what is happening with the National War Memorial Park, Labour Wellington MPs Grant Robertson and Annette King said today.

“Mr Finlayson refused to be interviewed by Radio New Zealand this morning. It would appear he has put the War Memorial Park on indefinite hold,” Annette King and Grant Robertson said.

“This will be a great disappointment to veterans, their families and the Wellington community. This park will be a fantastic monument to all those who have served New Zealand,” they said.

“The process for designing the Memorial Park is well advanced, and a design acceptable to the local community and school is on the cards. The money had been allocated by the previous Government. Everything is on the right track, except for Mr Finlayson.”

Annette King and Grant Robertson said the “only conclusion to draw is that Mr Finlayson is playing politics. Hiding behind the Government’s expenditure review is not on. This project is a win-win. It would create jobs and play a real role in developing our national identity.

“It is essential that the community is consulted on the project, but there is no need for an indefinite delay. Mr Finlayson needs to let the public know what his real agenda is here,” the Wellington MPs said.

“It would be nice if Mr Finlayson showed respect for old soldiers and was able to make a positive announcement before Anzac Day.”
