National is considering mining in National Parks

The National Government is still considering further undermining New Zealand’s clean, green reputation by allowing mining in National Parks, Labour Conservation spokesperson David Parker says.

“New Zealand’s ability to call itself clean and green has already been questioned by UK media, and now Gerry Brownlee is about to ensure this country’s international standing on environmental issues declines further by allowing mining in National Parks," David Parker said.

“Companies can already apply for mining licences on private land and on most conservation land outside of National Parks. Our National Parks have been protected for a purpose, so that they can preserved in their natural state for New Zealanders and tourists for generations to come.

“Our National Parks are jewels in New Zealand’s crown. They should be protected for their own sake, but are also very important to our tourism industry - which is one of this countries largest sources of employment and income.

“The fact that Gerry Brownlee said if land has a high conservation value it won’t be touched, but then said he couldn’t define high conservation value and that he is considering mining in National Parks shows that he is saying one thing but doing another. The areas being considered include large chunks of the Mount Aspiring National Park - areas of pristine mountains and forests.

“This comes hot on the heels of his Government's undermining of the ETS with large increases in taxpayer funded transfers to major emitters undermining the effectiveness of our existing ETS.

"These major attacks on our National Parks were never signalled by the National Party prior to the election. They have no mandate to allow mining in National Parks," David Parker said.
