Wellington is NZ’s Fair Trade capital

Wellington is NZ’s Fair Trade capital

Labour’s Wellington MPs are delighted the city is now officially New Zealand’s Fair Trade capital.

The Wellington City Council will be officially accredited today by the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ) as a Fair Trade City at a ceremony in the Council Chambers.

“We want to congratulate the small group who have worked hard over the years to make Fair Trade Wellington a reality,” Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson said.

“The Wellington City Council needs a special mention for the leadership it has shown. It has recognised the value of making our city the Fair Trade capital and has officially endorsed the concept by using Fair Trade products itself.”

Labour Deputy Leader Annette King said all Wellingtonians should get behind the push to use Fair Trade products.

“We must back our good intentions with action so I’ve made sure Fair Trade products are being used in the Labour Leaders Office in Parliament.

“It’s the ethical thing to do and the fair thing to do to ensure those who are producing these products get a fair a decent living from their work.”

Labour MP Charles Chauvel said he was proud to represent a city that made backing the Fair trade values a priority.

“This is not some marketing ploy. It’s about making a stand to ensure fair and stable price for produce, proper working conditions, and sustainable farming practices.

“Buying Fair Trade products will make a difference to the farmers who produce the goods. Fair Trade removes the barriers that hinder growth in developed nations which are often not included in international trade deals.”

Labour’s Wellington MPs know how much the locals love their coffee.

“We urge Wellingtonians who kick start their day with a caffine injection to buy Fair Trade coffee. Let’s make Fair-Trade a part of everyday life.” Grant Robertson said.
