Katene welcomes Labour’s GST off food policy
The Maori Party MP leading a change in law so GST is removed from healthy food has welcomed the Labour Party’s indication that it will seriously consider doing the same.
But Rahui Katene – who is sponsoring the Goods and Services Tax (Exemption of Healthy Food) Amendment Bill – is mindful that it is still early days yet.
“I’m pleased to hear that Labour is considering changing its policy so GST is taken off food and I look forward to their support when my bill comes up for its first reading,” the MP for Te Tai Tonga said.
“There is so much public support for this idea that I can see why Labour would also support it. I now call on the government to support my bill if they really are serious about helping families get ahead.”
The Maori Women’s Welfare League and the Country Women’s Institute are among many of the groups which have expressed support for Mrs Katene’s bill.
