MP congratulates Sustainable Coastlines For Award

Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga

MP for Maungakiekie

15 June 2010                                                            Media Statement
Maungakiekie MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga congratulates Sustainable Coastlines for winning the Protecting our Coasts and Oceans Award.

Thirteen organisations from across New Zealand have been honoured at the 20th annual Green Ribbon Awards, for making an outstanding contribution to protecting the environment.

“These awards recognise those who are taking practical action to deal with environmental challenges such as climate change, water quality, biodiversity and waste,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

“Sustainable Coastlines is run by young people in our electorate whose mission is to sustain and protect our coastlines through practical educational activities.

“It focuses on marine debris and provides ideas, coordination and support to communities to carry out local projects that will improve their coastal environment.

“Sustainable Coastlines runs events at grass-roots level on an entirely volunteer basis. Huge numbers of people have been involved in a series of highly successful coastal cleanup events.

“So far 75 tonnes of waste has been removed from our coastlines. The waste is also audited, so we can learn about what makes up marine debris and where it comes from.

“By motivating people towards positive action, the group aims to make sustaining and protecting our coastlines an enjoyable activity for everyone.  I commend them for their efforts and successes.”
