More support for Grandparents raising Grandchildren needed
Labour’s Associate Justice Spokesperson Charles Chauvel is supporting calls for changes to be made to make it easier for grandparents to access support in custody cases.
“The number of grandchildren being raised by their grandparents is growing. 10,000 children in New Zealand are being raised by extended family members and over 80% of those children are cared for by their grandparents,” says Charles Chauvel.
“In March of this year the Families Commission released a report on the role of Grandparents in New Zealand. The report found that in particular Grandparents raising Children were struggling.
“Many raising grandchildren had found it difficult to obtain clear information about their legal rights and eligibility for financial support. And there were calls for improvements in the range of support for grandparents who have taken on the role of primary caregiver for their grandchildren.
“The report clearly reflects the view of support organisations like the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust who want changes to legal aid, to assist them in custody cases.
“The Minister of Justice has failed to understand the issue. This is not about removing legal aid from parents. It's about finding a solution that includes wider family carers. The Government should be on the side of the child and work towards ensuring they live in a safe and secure home.
“Reviewing the status quo around support for grandparents raising grandchildren is the least the government can do,” says Charles Chauvel.
