Growers will be disappointed at Aussie Decision

Pip fruit growers will be disappointed at Australian decision to appeal apple ruling

New Zealand’s pip fruit growers will be bitterly disappointed at the decision of the Australian Government to appeal a WTO ruling that would allow New Zealand apples into Australia, Labour Agriculture spokesman Damien O’Connor says.

“I know the New Zealand pip fruit industry will be extremely disappointed and frustrated by the decision to appeal what is in essence a commonsense ruling by the WTO.

“New Zealand’s WTO victory should have allowed NZ apples into Australia and I know that the pip fruit industry was extremely excited by the news,” Damien O’Connor said.

“I am deeply disappointed that Australia has decided to appeal. It’s clear that the WTO ruling will now become a political football that will delay New Zealand pip fruit growers accessing a valuable market.

“Access to the Australian market is expected to be worth at least $30 million a year to the industry.
“The WTO process began in 2007 under Trade Minister Phil Goff and it is thanks to his efforts that New Zealand has gotten this far. I firmly believe that the decision by the Australian government is just delaying the inevitable. New Zealand Apples will be sold in Australia.

“However, should the appeal go in New Zealand’s favour this alone won't turn around the fortunes of the apple industry which has been battered by low prices and a volatile exchange rate in recent seasons.

“There needs to be greater control and coordination of supply and marketing to key high end markets overseas and increased emphasis should be placed on the need for the need for a pip fruit industry development plan,” Damien O’Connor said.
