Board of the Charities Commission appointments

The Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector Tariana Turia has today announced the appointment of Judith Stanway and Kenneth Williams to the Board of the Charities Commission.

Ms Stanway and Mr Williams replace outgoing members Judith Timpany and Ian Calder. The Minister has also reappointed Frank Claridge to the Board of the Commission for a further term.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Judith and Kenneth to the board and to reappoint Frank for another term.

“I would also like to acknowledge the work that outgoing board members Judith and Ian did during their time on the board and wish them well for the future.”

The Charities Commission was established under the Charities Act 2005 as an autonomous Crown entity and appointments are for three years.

The Board of the Commission is tasked with promoting public trust and confidence in the charitable sector including the operation of the register of charitable entities and the education, monitoring and investigation of charities.

Judith Stanway of Rotorua is Chair of Chartered Accountancy firm BDO New Zealand Ltd and managing partner of BDO Rotorua. Mrs Stanway is the former Chair of Lakeland Health Ltd, Health Rotorua PHO and formerly Deputy Chair of Te Puia (New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute).

Kenneth Williams of Auckland is a Chartered Accountant. He is involved in the community through sports and as a member of Pacific advisory boards. Mr Williams is a trustee of Life Education Trust City/West Auckland and a member of the Social Security Appeal Authority. He was formerly a member of the National Pacific Radio Trust Board.

Frank Claridge of Auckland is a consultant and adviser to the Tindall Foundation, carrying out organisational development reviews of community and voluntary agencies. He was formerly the Treasurer of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind. Mr Claridge has been, and is presently, involved with many charitable organisations and community groups as a committee member and as the provider of professional services. Mr Claridge has been a member of the Board of the Commission since its inception in 2005.
