Alcohol changes “just the beginning”

Phil Goff
Leader of the Labour Party

23 August 2010 Media Statement
Alcohol changes “just the beginning”

The measures announced today designed to address New Zealand’s binge drinking culture are a good start but should be seen as just the beginning, Labour Leader Phil Goff said today.

“The Government has the opportunity to change the culture of alcohol abuse in New Zealand and it must take a serious look at all the recommendations outlined recently by the Law Commission,” Phil Goff said.

“Tackling the ease of supply and access of alcohol to underage drinkers through family and friends is a good measure. But there are many other issues that fuel alcohol abuse by Kiwis of all ages that need to be tackled.

“Access to alcohol, the marketing of alcohol and education around responsible drinking need to be fundamental in addition to any legislative changes.

“There is no silver bullet to change New Zealand’s drinking culture, but what is needed is an approach that doesn’t ignore some of the key issues.

“Local communities will also be vital to bringing about the change needed around alcohol abuse. That’s why Labour supports locals having more of a say about how alcohol is sold in their communities.

“New Zealand has a once in a generation opportunity to address an issue which causes so much harm to families, ends lives, and puts pressure on our already stretched health resources.

“Labour is committed reducing the pain alcohol abuse causes in our homes and communities. We will support moves that will achieve that goal but it’s important the Government doesn’t take a half-hearted approach to reform.”
