Council plan strikes the right balance
Protecting the environment while ensuring residents, farmers and manufacturers can still go about their business is not a balance often successfully achieved. The Horizons Regional Council One Plan is an important step forward in striking the right balance between environmental stewardship, agri-business and habitation in the Manawatu region,” Labour’s Environment Spokesperson Charles Chauvel said today.
"The plan requires stakeholders in the region - urban residents, manufacturers, farmers and iwi - to take responsibility for ensuring that environmental, economic and social sustainability go hand-in-hand.
“Creating wealth from our land obviously means allowing for some impact on our environment, but this impact must be minimised via best practice measures to limit that impact to preserve our environment.
"Under the plan, existing farms will be able to keep operating, on the expectation that they make use of reasonably practicable farm management practices to minimise damage to waterways. "Horizons Regional Council should be congratulated on the Plan. It shows the beginnings of a way forward toward regional prosperity while ramping up essential environmental protections to start dealing with immediate and important challenges like improving water quality," Charles Chauvel said.
