Turia slams Act’s race card
games
Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia
is accusing ACT MP David Garrett of playing the race card in
a bid to create division and win votes.
“I’m tired of the Act Party playing games at the expense of unity or the responsibility to address issues of justice.
“These tactics play on the fears and prejudices that are held by the few.
“Once upon a time the Act Party believed in property rights but it has become clear that they will uphold these rights only for a particular sector of society.
“Somehow they have lost their way.
“Mr Garrett will search high and low for a Maori individual who might deny access but I’m surprised that he doesn’t take the same line of attack in hunting out those non-Maori who do not allow access to their private beaches.
“Frankly we are looking for a way forward that builds bridges and is unifying.
“It is deeply disappointing that all it seems the Act Party wants to do is foster intolerance and division.
“Our maturing nationhood will be seen when all New Zealanders – tangata whenua and tangata Tiriti – can live together without the politics of race being used as a source of conflict.”
