Labour moves to protect community housing organisations
Labour Housing spokesperson Moana Mackey has drafted a members bill which would amend the Charities Act 2005 to include the provision of affordable housing.
The decision to draft such a bill comes on the back of the Charities Commission's decision to deregister the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust last month.
"The decision by the Charities Commission is inexplicable, and Labour believes action needs to be taken immediately," Ms Mackey said.
"The Trust which was established only four years ago has already helped 35 families in to their own homes in one of the most expensive and unaffordable housing markets in New Zealand. Because they have been stripped of their charitable status they now face a $2.5 million tax bill over the next five years.
"That's money that should be going into housing families.
Ms Mackey said that the decision to deregister the housing trust flies in the face of Government claims to want to build the community housing sector.
"Labour absolutely agrees with the report of the Housing Shareholders Advisory Group issued earlier this year which highlighted the importance of growing the community housing sector, and the enormous potential just waiting to be tapped into. We don't need any more reviews or reports into what's happened here, we need action. Failing to act threatens what little third sector we have in housing."
Ms Mackey said that she hoped she was successful in having her Bill drawn quickly from the ballot.
"However Labour is open to working with the Government to resolve this issue through other avenues.
“If Phil Heatley fails to act then clearly the National Government’s claims about wanting to increase the amount of community housing will be shown to be nothing more than empty rhetoric,” Moana Mackey said.
