MP Moves To Disallow Folic Acid Regulation

After question time Parliament began debating a motion to cancel a Government regulation.

The motion relates to a complaint regarding the Government’s decision to defer the mandatory fortification of bread with folic acid.

The complainant argued before the Regulations Review Select Committee the Government’s decision to defer fortification was wrong in law, had failed to meet due process and was contrary to international treaty obligations.

The select committee by a majority declined the complaint, but a Labour MP Moana Mackey used the rarely used powers available to members of that committee to move a motion asking Parliament to disallow the regulation that created the deferral.

Under Parliament’s rule if such a motion is not withdrawn or disposed of by the House within 21 sitting days it comes into effect.
