Debate On Employment Law Changes Underway

Shortly after the House resumed under urgency at 9am the Māori Purposes Bill passed its first reading on a voice vote and was sent to the Maori affairs select committee for consideration.

MPs returned to the interrupted second reading debate of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill (No 2).

The bill makes changes in the areas of union access to workplaces, collective bargaining, the personal grievance system, employment institutions, and the role and enforcement powers of inspectors.

The Government intends to progress the bill through its committee stage today.

It is strongly opposed by Labour and the Greens.
