Maori Party Co-leader defends reputation of Lord Ernest
Rutherford
Monday 6 June 2011
Hon Tariana Turia, MP
for Te Tai Hauauru
Tariana Turia has today challenged Pataka Museum in Porirua for its decision to allow a ‘sex-chair’ on display which is plastered with $100 bills featuring the face of a famous New Zealander, Lord Ernest Rutherford.
“While I appreciate the argument that art should provoke a reaction, it shouldn’t be a case of anything goes. I think a line should be drawn when the art causes cultural offence’ said Mrs Turia.
The display of an "erotic chair" with a video camera in its hollow was described by exhibition co-ordinator Kylie Fyfe as "I don't think it will be offensive in any way”.
“I’d like to see that being explained to the kuia who contacted the Maori Party to express her displeasure at the lack of respect she felt was being accorded such a famous New Zealander’ said Mrs Turia. “She compared it to the adverse reaction a couple of years back when someone produced tea-towels imprinted with the face of a rangatira on them”.
"I wonder too how the descendents of this great man feel about his image being used in such a way"
“All I’m wanting to do, is to reiterate the importance of having respect for our ancestors – and to pose the question as to how appropriate is it to have the face of the father of modern physics, decorating a sex chair?”.
