Labour Statement on Darren Hughes Police Inquiry

Trevor MALLARD
Shadow Leader of the House
Wednesday, 8 June 2011

LabourPR: Labour welcomes police decision not to take action against Darren Hughes

Labour has welcomed the announcement by police that they will not be taking any action against former MP Darren Hughes

“The police have carried out a very thorough and lengthy investigation. Darren Hughes conducted himself with the utmost integrity throughout that process and co-operated fully with the inquiry.

“Darren resigned from Parliament at the time the complaint to police was made public because he did not believe he could carry out his work in the midst of the media storm that surrounded him and the speculation about his private life.

“He also wanted to commit himself fully to clearing his name. He has now done so.

“A lot of allegations were published by media outlets throughout the investigation. It appears the police have now investigated those claims thoroughly and ruled out any action.

“Labour’s belief throughout this difficult period has been that the police should be able to conduct their investigation without the threat of political interference or commentary. It was important to put justice above politics.

“Labour hopes that Darren Hughes will now be given the time and space to get on with his life.”
