National Backs Rights Abroad But Not at Home
National is happy to sign up to statements that shutting down access to the Internet could infringe human rights overseas, but enacts offending legislation at home, says Labour’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maryan Street.
"The Government attached itself to a statement at the 17th session of the UN Human Rights Council last week which said that people should have the same rights to freedom of expression online as they have offline,” Maryan Street said.
“But National recently passed the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011 which contains a provision that allows the Government by Order in Council to terminate people's Internet access for up to 6 months.
"Labour opposed that part of the law when it was being discussed. National appears to be taking a different position at home from its position overseas,” Maryan Street said.
"New Zealand is included in a statement given on behalf of all endorsing countries by the Swedish Foreign Affairs Minister, but the United Kingdom and France are conspicuously absent from the list of endorsing countries because they have 'three strikes' legislation like ours which permits termination of access to the Internet.
"The Internet can be a vehicle for democratic expression and should not be withheld from people at the whim of government. We call on the Government to revisit this provision in the current legislation," said Maryan Street.
