Cronyism contributes to
Minister’s budget blowout
Letting untendered contracts to cronies has contributed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs blowing his own budget, Labour’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maryan Street says.
“Murray McCully budgeted $7.1 million for contractors and consultants for 2010-11. He actually forked out $9.8 million, with the amount spent on untendered human resources contracts alone in the order of $1.2 million
“One of those contracts went to Momentum Consultants. One of Momentum’s directors is former National Prime Minister Jenny Shipley. Michelle Boag, a former National Party President, is a regular contractor. In the 2010-11 year Momentum earned $129,000 without having to go through a tender process,” Maryan Street said.
“Another company, Plum Consultancy, received $121,000 for an untendered contract that had $30,000 budgeted for it.
“Perhaps if the Minister paid closer attention to his own Ministry’s budget and less time working out which of his cronies should be handed a contract they don’t need to tender for, he might better fit with these times of fiscal constraint which his Government constantly reminds the rest of us about,” Maryan Street said.
