Mallard congratulates Julian Dean for Tour de France performance
Labour spokesperson for Sport and Recreation Trevor Mallard congratulates cyclist Julian Dean and his team, Garmin Cervelo, for their victory in the 2011 Tour de France Teams Classification.
“Julian is the first Kiwi to stand on the podium of the Champs-Élysées for the Tour de France and is one of only two New Zealanders ever to win a stage during the Tour. This is a remarkable achievement,” Trevor Mallard said.
“I have followed Julian and his team closely during this year’s Tour and their victory is well-deserved. The team’s win shows that New Zealanders have what it to takes to participate in high-level international cycling races and Julian’s success is an inspiration to us all.
“Julian rode the entire three weeks selflessly for his team. His contribution to the team’s four stage wins and overall Teams Classification victory, at the expense of his personal goals, is the perfect example of team work and sacrifice for young sporting Kiwis.”
