Green Party comment on Labour's savings policy announcement

Green Party comment on Labour's savings policy announcement

“The Green Party’s position is to have an urgent national conversation on raising the age of retirement, due to on-going issues with the affordability of New Zealand Superannuation as it currently stands,” said Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman, in response to Labour’s saving policy announcement.

“We have some questions about the fairness of raising the age of retirement, especially for those working in hard, manual labour jobs and for those with lower life expectancy, like Maori and Pacific Islanders.

“We welcome Labour’s leadership on this important economic issue.

“The age of retirement is part of a wider economic issue of low savings in New Zealand which our policies, like a capital gains tax (excluding the family home), are designed to address.

Current Green Party policy is to keep the retirement age unchanged at 65.
