National’s broadcasting policy – building on the past three years
Funding great New Zealand content, providing certainty for broadcasters and maintaining a smooth transition to digital television are the key broadcasting priorities for National, says National's Broadcasting Spokesman Jonathan Coleman.
Dr Coleman today released the National Party’s broadcasting policy.
"National is committed to delivering quality, public television broadcasting content funded through the NZ On Air contestable model," says Dr Coleman.
"Our focus is on funding television broadcasting content rather than broadcasters, which means the money is going towards getting great Kiwi content onto our screens.
"In a tight fiscal environment, we have maintained funding for Radio New Zealand and NZ On Air, which provides certainty for the broadcasting sector.
"We have also set out a clear path for Television New Zealand (TVNZ). By removing the TVNZ Charter, TVNZ is no longer constrained by an unworkable dual mandate. It now has the flexibility it needs to continue its transition from a traditional broadcaster to a multi-platform digital media company.
"National is also committed to the smooth transition to digital television. We have already laid the path to completing the switchover to free-to-air digital television by the end of 2013," says Dr Coleman.
