Possible coup in PNG a significant concern
Labour Foreign Affairs spokesperson Phil Goff is expressing concern at reports of a possible coup in Papua New Guinea.
ABC news in Australia is reporting that soldiers loyal to former ousted Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare have staged a bloodless coup.
“If true, this is bad news for Papua New Guinea and its Pacific neighbours,” Phil Goff said.
“Papua New Guinea has significant problems to work through in its internal political system and the social and economic challenges it faces.
“Intervention by military force provides no solutions,” Phil Goff said.
“The seizure of power by force takes away democratic rights and protections and opens up the prospect of abuse of power and lack of accountability of those in control. It sets a precedent for future coups whenever those who control the military decide to do so, and may promote further coups in other countries in the region.
“The army has no skills to address social and economic challenges and in almost every case around the world has failed to do so when they take control.
“If the reports prove to be true New Zealand will need to urgently work with its Pacific neighbours and Papua New Guinea to find a way to return the soldiers to their barracks and uphold the country’s constitution,” Phil Goff said.
