BIMs back Greens’ call for charge for irrigation water
The Green Party today renewed their call for a price on the commercial use of water following the release today of three Briefings to Incoming Ministers which recommended the use of market mechanisms to allocate water efficiently.
“The OECD has recommended New Zealand use market-based instruments to allocate water more efficiently, and now the Government’s officials are echoing this call,” said Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman.
“Officials from the Treasury, the Natural Resources Sector, and the Ministry for the Environment have all recommended that the Government consider a price on water to drive water use efficiency.
“A charge on the commercial use of water was a priority for us in the election and will be a priority for us during MOU negotiations with the Government.
“A price on the commercial use of water is a sensible policy whose time has come.
“We want to see a price on the commercial use of water in our Memorandum of Understanding with the Government,” said Dr Norman.
