Gerry Brownlee: The Ultimate Roadblock
Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee’s refusal to answer any questions about the Manawatu Gorge closure is pure arrogance and shows National is taking the provinces for granted, says Palmerston North MP Iain Lees-Galloway.
“Before Parliament adjourned last year, I asked Gerry Brownlee seven simple questions about the Manawatu Gorge road. They were requests for information that should have been readily available if the Minister was taking the situation seriously but by January 18 all he could tell me is he’d get back to me later. He still hasn’t answered my questions.
“Last week we heard that the road will be closed until at least July. That’s almost a year since it was first shut and there’s no guarantee it will be open by then – in the middle of winter when the Gorge is least stable. Still Gerry Brownlee says nothing.
“I understand that journalists have also been contacting his office seeking his thoughts on the matter. The Minister hasn’t got back to them yet either.
“Getting an answer from Gerry Brownlee is harder than getting through the Gorge. He’s proving to be a very effective roadblock.
“Businesses on both sides of the Manawatu Gorge are
suffering. National must stop taking the provinces for
granted and get Gerry Brownlee up here to see the situation
for himself. The minister must listen to residents and
businesses and get his officials to analyse the options for
a more resilient road link east of Palmerston
North.”
