Paltry increase in minimum wage won’t help workers
The paltry 50 cent increase in the minimum wage will do little to help Kiwis who are working hard but simply can’t earn enough to support their families, says Labour Leader David Shearer.
“Large numbers of workers on the minimum wage are finding that it is simply not enough to pay for the basic necessities of life, like rent, power and petrol. They are being forced to seek additional help from social agencies, like the Salvation Army, so they can feed and clothe their children.
“These are people who want to work and while every little bit helps, an extra 50 cents an hour is not enough to make a difference to these peoples’ lives.
“Labour believes the minimum wage should be increased to $15 an hour. If we want to people to work and take responsibility for supporting themselves and their families, we have to make sure they earn a wage they can live on.”
