On right track with Crafar farms decision
The decision to overturn the sale of the Crafar farms on the basis it would bring no additional value to New Zealand sets the right agenda for the future of farming in this country, Labour’s Primary Industries spokesperson Damien O’Connor says.
“The current level of interest in Kiwi farming by foreign investors is understandable. Labour, however, is not prepared to see the long-term ownership and control of our farming land given away to the highest bidder.
“We need to be setting a high standard for any further investment. We need absolute assurance that any investment will add more value and provide more opportunities as a way off offsetting the inflationary pressure foreign capital puts on farmland prices,” Damien O’Connor said.
“The High Court has ruled that the benefits were overstated in the Pengxin application and that the enthusiasm of the National Government to sell this land meant they refused to intervene and block the sale.
“This decision is a good one for New Zealand farmers and for young Kiwis seeking farming opportunities in the future,” said Damien O’Connor said.
