Air New Zealand Job Cuts Set Scene For Sale |

Leader
24 Feb 2012
Rt Hon Winston Peters says the big job cuts announced by Air New Zealand are the first step towards the government selling down its stake in the company.
Air New Zealand announced today that they are slashing 441 jobs over the next 4 months.
“The jobs are being eliminated to make the company more profitable in the short term so that it is more attractive to foreign investors.
“With Air New Zealand cutting these jobs to prepare it for sale, how can the employees of Mighty River Power, Meridian Energy, Genesis Energy and Solid Energy have any faith that their jobs are safe?
“The people heading for the dole queues won’t be agreeing with the Finance Minister’s comments that the structure of these companies under its proposed model is a “win-win,” says Mr Peters.
The Air New Zealand job losses follow announcements of 305 jobs being cut at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and looming front line job losses in the public health sector.
“It’s unacceptable that at a time of high unemployment and immense pressure on the public sector that the government is standing by its foolish slash and burn approach” says Mr Peters.
