Standing up for New
Zealand
(Embargoed till 1.15pm Speech notes attached)
Our economy must be run in New Zealand’s national interest, not someone else’s and that’s why we must keep control of our profitable assets, says Labour Leader David Shearer.
In a speech to North Shore Grey Power today, David Shearer said that while it is important to encourage foreign investment, it must be on our terms and in our best interests.
“Labour will stand up for New Zealand and do what is best for us not what will benefit foreign investors or other economies. Simply selling our assets and land won’t improve our productivity.
“Our future policies will be focused on whether they help us achieve the New Zealand we want in 10 or 20 years’ time. That’s a country where every Kiwi is offered the opportunity for success. It’s a country where we get in behind people who are working hard, making good choices and doing their best to raise their kids in the right way.
“To do this we must be bold enough to transform our economy. We can learn a lot about how to do that from the experiences of countries like Finland, Denmark, Israel and Singapore. They’ve done well because they’ve invested in their talent and creativity. We can do the same.
“My intention is to create a new destiny for New Zealand, not to sell our assets and land and hope the buyers will act in our interests. You can’t sell your way to a brighter future.”
