Ban on
Foreign Fishing Vessels Supported by NZ
First
New Zealand First has welcomed moves
to make foreign-registered fishing boats register in this
country so their crews are covered by New Zealand
law.
Primary Industries spokesperson Richard
Prosser says the overdue move targeting foreign-flagged
fishing boats operating in our waters will be rolled out
over the next four years.
“It will ensure the
good treatment of crews, the safety of fishing boats, and
ethical and sustainable fishing practices.”
Mr
Prosser says the greater transparency will make it difficult
for crews to illegally dump unwanted fish caught as
by-catch.
“Overall it will lead to a bigger slice
of fishery profits channelled into the domestic economy,
improving returns for local suppliers, quota holders, Maori,
and the economy in
general.”
