Prison Manager Serco Failing All New Zealanders
New Zealand First says official figures revealing foreign-owned Serco are only meeting half their performance targets at Mt Eden Corrections Facility are proof that private management of prisons is failing.
Corrections spokesperson Asenati Lole-Taylor says statistics released today show Serco met just half of its 37 targets for the nine months till the end of April are lamentable.
“Of concern is the unacceptable increase in the number of serious assaults at the prison.
“The safety of prison staff is put on the line when violence erupts. The last thing we want to see is yet another prison officer being seriously injured or killed.”
Mrs Lole-Taylor says an increase in the number of wrongful releases by Serco is also a safety issue.
“They are wrongfully releasing prisoners onto the street who pose a threat to the public.
“New Zealanders deserve better than the sort of management shambles being dished up by Serco.”
