Hon Tau Henare to attend Pacific Parliaments Workshop

New Zealand’s relationships in the Pacific will be strengthened by its participation in the Regional Community Engagement Workshop for Pacific Parliaments taking place on 6 and 7 August in Apia under the auspices of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Hon Tau Henare said today.

Hon Tau Henare is attending the workshop in his capacity as the current Permanent Delegate to the IPU and the Chairperson of the IPU Group.

“This will be a chance for increased engagement of Pacific nations in the activities of the IPU, and will follow up on successful meetings in Auckland in 2010 and last year in Australia.

“I am expecting to have useful meetings with my Pacific colleagues to discuss ways in which we can assist each other to develop effective community engagement strategies that can be worked into our strategic planning going forward.”

The workshop will focus on communication tools available for community engagement and assistance measures available to parliaments to help develop and implement community engagement plans. Hon Tau Henare will lead a session on parliamentarians and constituency service.

In addition to attendees from around the region, the IPU’s Director of Programmes, Martin Chungong will address the workshop on the work of the IPU in the Pacific. Following his time in the Samoa, Mr Chungong will visit the New Zealand Parliament on 9 and 10 August.
