EPIC to contribute to growth of Chch

The new Enterprise Precinct Innovation Centre (EPIC) facility has been officially opened in Christchurch today by Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce.

“The opening of EPIC is an important step in the economic rebuilding of Christchurch and will create a valuable focal point for ICT businesses in the city,” Mr Joyce says.

“The blueprint for the new city includes plans for an innovation precinct in this area. EPIC, which will house 16 high-tech companies who have faced challenges with premises since the earthquake, is effectively the start of this,” Mr Joyce says.

“Christchurch hasa strong base of high-tech companies whose products and services are in demand internationally, alongside expertise in research in areas such as ICT and engineering. EPIC is a significant step towards better linking these strengths.

“Leveraging innovation and research more effectively to grow business internationally is a key focus of the Government’s Business Growth Agenda.”

“EPIC is an excellent example of a public-private partnership where local government, businesses and the Government have worked together to get things done,” says Mr Joyce.

Christchurch City Council has provided the land rent-free for five years; the project has been supported and financed by the Bank of New Zealand and underwritten by the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust.

The Government, through New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, is investing $1.8 million over three years.

EPIC is one of four facilities that Mr Joyce will be opening in Christchurch today. He will also be opening the new Skills Hub, the new ARANZ Geo building and the new SKOPE facilities.
