Council should drop dam media complaint
The Hawkes Bay Regional Council should drop their complaint about Radio New Zealand’s coverage of the environmental impacts of the proposed Ruataniwha dam project, says the Green Party.
“Not content with science from the Department of Conservation and GNS being supressed, the Hawkes Bay Regional Council would like the media reporting of the issue supressed as well,” said Green Party environment spokesperson Eugenie Sage.
“Had it not been for Radio New Zealand breaking this story, the public would have been none the wiser about the serious environmental implications of the Council’s proposed dam project.
“It is critical that we have a free media that can hold the government and regional councils to account.
“Rather than attacking Radio New Zealand for shining a light on the dam project, the Hawkes Bay Regional Council should be supporting the release of the full scientific information about its environmental impact.
“Radio New Zealand and other media were just doing their job, to report on this important issue. It is time the regional council did their job as the local environmental regulator and support all the scientific information seeing the light of day.”
