Highway proposal sees community
united against it
Labour MP for Māngere Su’a William Sio says the people of Mangere will fight tooth and nail to oppose a government roading proposal which looks set to carve up the community.
A new freight highway through Mangere and Otahuhu is being considered as part of an $11 billion transport package Auckland Transport is consulting on.
“Three schools, several churches and at least 100 homes are expected to be displaced if this road gets the go ahead.
“If John Key and Auckland Transport – largely a mouthpiece for the Government - think they can bulldoze this through with little thought for the people of Mangere they are wrong.
“I’ve endorsed the formation of a community coalition to begin campaigning against the plan and will do all I can to ensure residents’ concerns are heard.
“National already has a pattern of not listening to communities and I won’t stand by and allow that to happen in this case.
“The people of Mangere are committed to protecting their homes, their schools and their church buildings from being bulldozed in the name of ‘progress’.
“There are other options in this package. This one should be canned now,” said Su’a William Sio.
