Police Resources Strained to Maintain Law & Order
New Zealand First has warned that serious problems will keep emerging while Police are not given sufficient resources to maintain law and order.
Associate law and order spokesperson Asenati Lole-Taylor says over the past 25 years, Police have had budget cutbacks, staff cutbacks, restructuring and at times have not had the resources to do their jobs.
“There is unfair criticism of police when things sometimes go wrong because often they have been denied the personnel and facilities needed to deal with complex and time consuming matters.
“It also should be noted that many experienced officers have left the Police due to policies that inadvertently made it financially attractive to leave the job.
“It takes time to replace this expertise which is crucial for maintaining and investigating law and order.
“In 2005, New Zealand First got 1000 extra Police on the beat with its arrangements with Labour but front line numbers are now being reduced.
“It is becoming increasingly more difficult for Police to carry out their duties – a burden they should not have to deal with,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
